Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese sailor and was the first person to sail around the world. After Columbus landed in the ‘new world’ of the Americas in 1492, Magellan wanted to try to reach south-east Asia, where many spices grew, by sailing westwards across the Atlantic Ocean.
He died on 27 April 1521 on Mactan Island, Cebu, and the Philippines.
