If there is a wifi device installed in your laptop then you simply just need a wifi router for your laptop device to catch signals from the wifi router..The router might be connected via Lan cable or any other 3g or wireless device. Then simply serach for a wifi network and connect to it,then you can access the internet from it.
if there is no wifi installed in your laptop then you can simply purchase a usb wifi device from market.Just plug that device in your laptop and it will catch the signals from any wifi router then you can use internet from it.

Yes, of course you can use wifi in your laptop. And there is no a such disadvantage of using it. But yes when you are not using internet then prefer to disable wifi mode as it will unnecessarily look for the network and will waste battery life.
In order to enable WIFI in your laptop there are few steps:
>>Now a days laptops have a wifi button so that you can directly switch it on and connect to a network.
>>In older models you will have to go to the Control panel, and follow some steps depending upon the version of your Window.
If you are using XP then:
>>Click Start and choose Control Panel. Double click on Network Connections icon.
>>Now look for the Wireless Network Connection icon. Right Click on the icon and enable it.
If you are using Windows 7 then:
>>Click Start and choose Control Panel. Click the Network and Sharing Center icon.
>>Now on the left hand side, click on the Change adapter settings.
>>Then Right Click on the Wireless Network Connection icon.
Please let us know if you face any issue.
